The ONION network, created in 1995 for government use by the US military, was subsequently, in 2004, extended for everyone’s use by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and is now managed by “The Tor Project”, which continues to improve and develop this system, receiving funding from the big internet players, Google among all.
There have already been many publications about it, but they are all very technical and aimed at insiders, with this series of articles I will try to accompany you, like a sort of Virgil for Dante, into the underworld of the internet, to do this I will try to be less technical possible and I will try to explain the mechanisms that allow you to enter and move in the dark in perfect anonymity, yes because once you enter the deep Internet, no one knows who you are and where you are connected from, unless you are foolish.
This peculiarity has meant that in these places we often come across illegal material such as drugs, weapons, murderers and child pornography, just to name a few, which is why the deep web can also be a very dangerous place. I warned you, leave all hope or you who enter!

THE ACCESS DOOR

The tool for accessing the DeepWeb is a program that we can download from the internet at this address: https://www.torproject.org/download by selecting the operating system in use, you can download the right version.

Once downloaded, installation usually creates a folder on your desktop

Open the folder and run the file Start Tor Browser

The first time you run it, it will show the possibility to configure access to the network, if you have for example a PROXY (a blocking system, many offices have it, see also the Public Administration network), for simplicity, try click the Connect button:

If there are no problems, the system starts and starts connecting you to the nodes of the network, and when everything is ok, we should be inside the ONION network, the system always checks that there is no problem, so pay attention to the messages that the browsers.

Always remember that TOR must be launched from this folder and you MUST ALWAYS USE its navigator and not others, you could lose your anonymity, it is also important not to give references or confidential data, if you want you can copy the folder on a USB stick and take it with you and use the system when you need it, without having to install anything.

The leap into deep darkness

But the DeepWeb?? You ask, we’ll get there right away.

Two simple concepts, the ONION network (literally onion) allows you to protect users from the analysis of internet traffic, using a separate routing, a subnet that does not follow the rules of the Internet IP network, for this reason the engines can not index the content and the servers, the operation of the TOR network is simple: the data that belong to any communication, do not pass directly from the client to the server, as happens on the WEB unencrypted, but pass through the Tor servers that act by virtual routers that make up a new layered encrypted network (that’s why the onion…). Furthermore, the system is designed to avoid that the path you take from one point of the network to another is never the same, it always changes and it is therefore impossible to trace a user on this network, I repeat, unless the user provides himself general information or confidential information, and I assure you that it happens.

But how do you reach sites if search engines don’t work? Remember that most of the servers located in the DeepWeb are secret and want to remain so, so it will be impossible for us to navigate it all unless whoever has a server or service wants to let us know.

Can TOR be useful?

Certainly TOR has saved many lives, imagine how many political dissidents, journalists, men of courage, who thanks to this system have been able to make the truth known, have started the Arab Spring, have allowed the disintegration of totalitarian regimes… So regardless from the fact that the bad guys use this network, it is also true that privacy, in this period that is raped a bit by everyone, is given back to us by this very useful tool.
